1 A devotional from Pastor Rick Warren spoke about giving with joy. There was a paragraph that reminded me of my parents.

There was a lesson in their life that goes back multiple generations. One of the stories that comes to mind is of a man who walked into the bodega in Matanzas and said to my dad "Guajiro how are you related to Jose Gonzalez Guedes". Turns out my father looked so similar to his grand-father that this man recognized him although my father and his grandfather were living on opposite ends of the Matanzas province (hundreds of miles apart). The man went on to tell my father that he had been a traveling salesman on horseback visiting farms in the area and that he was always welcomed to stay at Rio Blanco farm overnight to continue his travels in the morning.

Jose Gonzalez Guedes was Abuela Josefa's father (he was born in the late 1800's); family lessons can go on to live for generations!

At my mothers funeral I spoke about how my parents practiced the generosity of the "Cooking Pot", always giving food to friends and relatives going through illness or a difficult time. This story is the source of that example.

A little family history with some Godliness included.

It is my hope the generations to come continue this practice.

2 Emelina lived in the City of Matanzas in her elder years. When I was young boy my father would take me to visit her. Something that stood out to me was that she smoked Cuban Cigars, always in private. In the last few years we were in Cuba she was keenly aware of how difficult it was to get cigars. She would always save a couple for my dad.

Emelina was my dad's paternal grandmother.

3 He was likely born in the village of "Puerto" near the City of Oviedo. I visited that village in the early 1990's and met the one sister still alive at the time, her name was "Argenta".

Currently there are no documents for him.

They were (Two brothers married with two sisters) Luciano and Maria Josefa; Eliodoro and Tia Maria. Gonzalez Moreno, Maria Tomasa (I123)

8 My father enjoyed Cuban poetry and Punto Guajiro, which is marked by improvisational singing in rhyme. He would often improvise a few lines and this one in particular is one my favorites as it is dedicated to Matanzas.

Matanzas quedo llorando
El dia que yo sali
Y dicen que el Yumuri
Por mi esta preguntando

The Sunday before he passed away I spent all afternoon talking with him and got into all kinds of subjects. We soon landed on Cuban Guajiro Poetry and specifically talked about one of his favorites from his days in Matanzas. A man by the name "Guillermo Sosa Curbelo". My father explained this man's ability to improvise and rhyme on the fly with no prepared material. He said he once asked Mr. Sosa how he could possibly have such a wide breadth of knowledge on so many different subjects.

He said I'll tell you my secret; the little portfolio I carry with me is full of articles and different publications from magazines and newspapers. Every time I'm somewhere waiting for something I pull out one and start reading. My friends that is called dedication to your craft.

I then went on the web and looked him up. Sure enough he was there, my Dad was pleased and said "I'm not surprised; he was that good"!

11 Was a Lt. Colonel in the liberation army in Cuba 1895. His name is listed in an official book/listing published in Cuba in the early 1900's of all the veterans of the war of independence. I was able to see an original of this book at a book-fair in Miami. The book is known as the Roloff book, named after the officer who compiled the information for the new congress in Cuba. Cubans refer to these men as Mambises, a term that comes with a great deal of respect and admiration.
